Arco is a genuine high-desert decision point: stop briefly for services and atomic history, or use the town as the base for a longer Craters of the Moon visit. It is also the last compact service anchor before the quieter drive toward Carey and Fairfield.

Choose the right Arco stop

Town history stop: allow 45 to 90 minutes for the downtown atomic-history story, the submarine sail displayed in town, and a meal or fuel stop.
EBR-I stop: the Experimental Breeder Reactor-I Atomic Museum sits on U.S. 20/26 between Idaho Falls and Arco. It is seasonal, so verify opening information before making it the day’s fixed appointment.
Craters of the Moon: the national monument entrance is southwest of Arco on the same highway corridor. Give it at least several hours; it is not a quick town attraction.
Overnight: stay in Arco when you want an early start at Craters of the Moon or a rested departure into the less-served interior.

Craters of the Moon planning

The National Park Service recommends beginning at the Robert Limbert Visitor Center. The developed monument entrance and paved loop are reached directly from U.S. 20/26/93; navigation shortcuts can lead toward remote, unpaved parts of the larger preserve.

Check operating conditions before leaving Arco. Snow, heat, smoke, wind, cave access, and seasonal road operations can change how much of the park is practical. Carry water and keep the park visit separate from any ambitious same-day push to Boise.

Route logistics

Westbound, refuel and confirm food and water before continuing toward Carey and Fairfield. Eastbound, Arco is the last easy reset before the long open approach toward Idaho Falls. The Big Lost River Rest Area can be useful on that eastern stretch, but confirm facility status and never treat a rest area as an overnight plan.

Stop or skip?

Arco merits a short stop for its unusual history even when the national monument is not on the schedule. If Craters of the Moon is the day’s main goal, reduce other stops and give the landscape the time it needs. Skip the park extension when conditions, daylight, or fatigue argue for reaching the next overnight first.
