The Paleon Museum is the clearest attraction. Its fossils, geological material, and working preparation setting connect Glenrock directly to Wyoming’s prehistoric landscape. The town also tells a second travel story through the Oregon Trail, Pony Express, telegraph, and nearby North Platte River corridor.
Together, those themes make Glenrock a useful alternative to driving straight through the High Plains transition.
What kind of stop it is
Best described as a one-to-three-hour paleontology and history stop.
Choose the Paleon Museum for the strongest single visit. Add downtown or a trail-history stop when you have more time. An overnight is possible, but most Route 20 travelers will use Glenrock as a deliberate pause before the larger lodging and services base in Casper.
Choose the shape of the stop
- Dinosaurs: the Paleon Museum offers an up-close look at fossils and geological discoveries from the area. Verify the schedule before arrival because a small museum can have limited operating days.
- Downtown history: the historic Commerce Block, Hotel Higgins, and nearby buildings make a compact walking loop. Al’s Way adds signs and stories to the walk.
- Emigrant trails: Rock in the Glen preserves inscriptions associated with Oregon Trail travelers. The Deer Creek Museum adds the local Pony Express, telegraph, and settlement story.
- Time outside: Deer Creek Park and the community pathway provide a lower-commitment walking break when an indoor visit does not fit.
Route 20 planning notes
Westbound, Glenrock is the last proportional stop before Casper becomes the primary museum, service, and overnight anchor. Eastbound, it adds a distinct history stop before the broad run toward Lusk.
Do not stack every attraction into one visit. Paleontology plus a downtown walk is enough for a strong stop; add trail history only when the day has room.
