Drive this stretch when you want an unhurried basin crossing after Thermopolis. Worland gives the route a practical service-town anchor, and Greybull provides the junction and reset before the final run toward Cody.
Choose the basin’s one main stop
This section works as an easy half-day transfer or as most of a day with one museum. The key is to avoid assigning destination time to Thermopolis, Worland, and Greybull on the same schedule.
Westbound, finish the chosen Thermopolis experience before departure. Use Worland for fuel, food, and the Washakie Museum when basin history is the priority. Use Greybull for a later reset or for its seasonal aviation attraction. Then continue toward Cody on the next segment.
Eastbound, Greybull is the first decision point and Worland the strongest service stop before Thermopolis. Protect enough time for Wind River Canyon and the Thermopolis attraction or overnight that justified the direction of travel.
Faster and slower versions
- Direct version: make one practical stop in Worland or Greybull and continue.
- Museum version: give either the Washakie Museum or a Greybull museum a real visit, not both.
- Slower version: overnight in Thermopolis or Cody and let the basin occupy the middle day.
The Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting is seasonal and weather-exposed; the Washakie Museum and other small museums also require a current schedule check. Confirm before the drive.

Thermopolis, Worland, Greybull, and Cody are the logical places to handle needs; do not assume every interval has the exact service required. Check Wyoming 511 for wind, heat, winter weather, construction, and smoke.
If the day slips, drop the second intermediate stop first. Keep the fuel stop, preserve a comfortable arrival at the next overnight, and let the broad basin scenery carry the miles.
