Cross-country role
Pennsylvania connects eastern Ohio with western New York along the Lake Erie side of Route 20. Erie is the state’s principal service and overnight anchor, while Girard and North East keep the crossing tied to the historic highway.
In the larger Miami to Boston to Route 20 journey, Pennsylvania is a natural Great Lakes reset between Cleveland-side Ohio and western New York.

Route 20 provides the town-to-town crossing. Presque Isle, the Erie bayfront, Lake Erie shoreline stops, and most winery visits add local driving and should be treated as selected experiences rather than required stops.
