Ashton

On Route 20

Ashton is the first full-service Idaho gateway west of Island Park. It works as a meal-and-fuel stop, a modest overnight, or the starting point for a deliberate Mesa Falls outing before Route 20 continues toward St. Anthony and Rexburg.

The town itself can be brief. The waterfalls, trails, and forest roads around it are what turn Ashton into a longer stop.

Choose the right Ashton stop

Town reset: allow about 30 to 60 minutes for fuel, food, supplies, and a short walk. This is the efficient choice when Yellowstone or Island Park already filled most of the day.
Rail-trail pause: use the Ashton–Tetonia Trail for a walk or ride when you want open-country views without committing to the Mesa Falls loop. Choose a trailhead and turnaround before setting out.
Mesa Falls outing: Upper and Lower Mesa Falls belong to a separate scenic-byway excursion rather than a quick Route 20 pull-off. Allow several hours for the drive, overlooks, and visitor-area time.
Overnight: stay in Ashton when you want to leave Yellowstone’s gateway traffic behind but do not want to push through Rexburg after dark.

Mesa Falls planning

The Mesa Falls Scenic Byway begins from the Ashton side and reconnects with U.S. 20 near Island Park. It is most useful as a planned loop or alternate approach, not as an automatic addition to every Route 20 day.

Road access and visitor services are seasonal. Part of the byway closes to automobiles in winter, so verify conditions before leaving the highway. Keep the direct Route 20 line when daylight is short, weather is changing, or the day already includes substantial park time.

Route logic

Eastbound, Ashton is the last practical town before the longer Island Park and West Yellowstone approach. Westbound, it is a clean place to reset before St. Anthony and Rexburg. Fuel here when needed rather than assuming a scenic side road will provide services.

Check Idaho 511 for road conditions, especially during winter weather or wildfire season.

Stop or skip?

Stop for services even when the schedule is tight. Linger when Mesa Falls or the rail trail is one of the day’s priorities. Skip the scenic detour—not the basic readiness check—when conditions or daylight make the direct corridor the better choice.
