St. Anthony is a practical small-town break between Ashton and Rexburg. The Henry’s Fork gives the town an easy outdoor pause, while the nearby sand dunes support a much longer outing for travelers who arrive prepared.

Choose the right stop

Quick reset: allow 30 to 60 minutes for fuel, food, downtown, or a shaded break at Keefer Park by the Henry’s Fork.
River time: choose a walk, picnic, or planned fishing stop. Treat the river as moving water and follow posted access and safety guidance.
Sand-dunes outing: the St. Anthony Sand Dunes are northwest of town and deserve dedicated time. Confirm access, seasonal restrictions, vehicle rules, permits, equipment, and rental arrangements before leaving the corridor.
Overnight: St. Anthony can provide a quieter pause, but Rexburg has the broader range of lodging and city services.

Keep the dunes proportional

The dunes are a regional destination, not a roadside overlook. A traveler who only wants to see the landscape should identify an established public access area in advance. Off-highway riding, sandboarding, and camping require more preparation than a casual town stop, and winter wildlife protections can affect motorized access.

If the day already includes Mesa Falls, Island Park, or Yellowstone, keep St. Anthony to a riverfront or meal break. Pairing multiple major outdoor excursions will turn a short Route 20 stage into a rushed day.

Route logic

Westbound, St. Anthony is the final small-town reset before Rexburg. Eastbound, it is a useful services check before Ashton and the more weather-sensitive Island Park approach. Use Idaho 511 when wind, snow, smoke, or road work could affect the drive.

Stop or skip?

Stop when you need a calm riverfront break or practical services. Give the town a half day only when the dunes or fishing are a real trip priority. Otherwise, continue to Rexburg for the stronger overnight base.
