Day 1: Ashton to Rexburg

Begin in Ashton after the West Yellowstone to Ashton Scenic Drive. Use the town for breakfast, fuel, or an easy reset before deciding whether the day stays on Route 20 or expands into a waterfall outing. Mesa Falls and other regional drives should receive their own time block and a check of current road and weather conditions.

Continue to St. Anthony for a meal or short break. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes can be a major recreation commitment, not a quick roadside stop. If dunes are the goal, verify access, rules, weather, and equipment needs and let that outing carry the day.

Reach Rexburg for the overnight. A walk at Nature Park or the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens can make the evening feel complete without adding another drive.

Day 2: Choose one Rexburg focus

Use the morning for the Legacy Flight Museum, a campus-and-gardens walk, or a longer park visit. Confirm museum and campus access before building a tight schedule around either one.

After lunch, decide whether to end the trip in Rexburg or continue toward Idaho Falls. Do not combine a major dunes or waterfall day with a rushed westbound drive; add a night when the outdoor extension is the reason for the trip.

Travelers continuing west can use the riverfront in Idaho Falls as a simple closing stop, then begin the next itinerary after a full night’s rest.

Fuel, food, and conditions

Ashton, St. Anthony, and Rexburg all support ordinary traveler needs, but opening times and lodging demand can vary. Rexburg’s university calendar can affect availability. East Idaho weather can shift quickly, so check road and recreation conditions before leaving the main corridor, carry water, and keep offline directions for rural side trips.
