Portage is the practical lakefront-access stop between Gary and Chesterton. Its clearest traveler role is Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, where a pavilion, beach, fishing pier, breakwater, and short trails make Lake Michigan possible without building the whole day around a long hike.

How much time to allow

• Quick shoreline reset: 45–60 minutes for the riverwalk, pier, and lake view.
• Beach or trail pause: 90 minutes to 2 hours when weather and parking cooperate.
• Services only: 20–30 minutes near Route 20 when Chesterton or Michigan City will carry the main stop.

The lakefront is reached from Route 20 by using State Road 249 and local industrial-access roads. It feels more removed from the highway than the mileage suggests, so budget for the out-and-back rather than treating it as a roadside overlook.

The parking decision

The National Park Service warns that the lakefront lot can fill by mid-morning during busy summer periods. Arrive early when this is a priority; otherwise keep Chesterton or another Dunes access point as the fallback. Check Indiana Dunes National Park conditions before leaving the route, especially for beach safety, closures, and seasonal facility changes.

Stop or skip?

Stop in Portage when the group wants an accessible, compact lakefront experience or a lower-commitment alternative to a longer Dunes hike. Skip the lakefront detour when the day already includes Marquette Park, a major Dunes trail, or Washington Park in Michigan City.

Portage pairs best with Gary as the western entry and Chesterton as the town-centered Dunes base. Choose one primary lakefront stop among the three rather than collecting brief beach visits.
