Drive section
Gary and the Indiana Dunes Gateway
West Indiana Route 20 gateway section built around Gary, the Dunes-side communities, and the Illinois handoff.
Gary and the Indiana Dunes Gateway
This section crosses from the Chicago side into Indiana, then runs through Gary, Portage, and Chesterton along the Indiana Dunes gateway. The direct drive is short; lakefront detours, parking, and trail time are what determine the day.

These compact rows are optional off-route trips and add-on stops, with the full corridor layer map still available when you want the broader read.
Quick orientation
Use Route 20 as the spine, but choose the shoreline destination before leaving it. Gary’s Marquette Park, Portage Lakefront, and the Dunes access near Chesterton are different stops with overlapping lakefront roles.
West-to-east stop roles
- Gary is the state-entry city; use a specific lakefront or history destination rather than an unplanned loop.
- Portage offers the compact lakefront-and-riverwalk stop when accessibility and a shorter time block matter.
- Chesterton is the fuller town base for a national-park or state-park visit.
How long it takes
Allow roughly 30–45 minutes for the basic Gary-to-Chesterton run without a major stop, then add time for urban traffic and each lakefront detour. A compact shoreline pause needs about an hour; a Dunes beach or trail deserves 3–5 hours.
What to cut first
When time tightens, keep one shoreline stop and remove the duplicates. Portage is easiest to treat as a brief reset; Chesterton deserves the time when you want a real Dunes outing; Gary belongs when the state-entry or Marquette Park chapter matters.
Conditions and continuation
Lake Michigan weather, beach hazards, trail conditions, and seasonal facility hours can change the best stop. Check Indiana Dunes National Park or state-park guidance before committing the lakefront time, and use Indiana 511 for road construction or winter conditions. Busy summer parking can reward an early start.
Eastbound travelers can continue to Michigan City for another lakefront choice or turn inland toward South Bend. If the Dunes already consumed half a day, do not force Washington Park into the same afternoon.
