Indiana Dunes to South Bend Route 20 Weekend

This two-day drive gives Lake Michigan and South Bend separate chapters. The plan works because it does not treat Gary, Portage, Chesterton, Michigan City, and the Dunes as five equal shoreline stops.

Before leaving

Choose the primary Dunes access point, check National Park Service or Indiana state-park conditions, and confirm parking and beach safety. Use Indiana 511 for construction and weather. If a Notre Dame event is scheduled, verify South Bend lodging and arrival time before committing to the overnight.

Day 1 — Indiana entry and the Dunes

Start at Gary only when Marquette Park or a focused city-history stop matters. Otherwise continue to Portage for a compact lakefront-and-riverwalk pause or Chesterton for the fuller Dunes day.

Give the chosen beach or trail 3–5 hours. Chesterton can support lunch, supplies, or a downtown pause before or after the park. Do not add another full shoreline stop simply because it is nearby.

Overnight in Chesterton when an early second Dunes morning matters. Overnight in Michigan City when you want Washington Park or the lakefront city layer. Continue to South Bend that evening when the second day’s museum or campus stop is the priority.

Day 2 — Lakefront option and South Bend

If Day 1 centered on a trail rather than the beach, use Michigan City for a brief Washington Park or lighthouse chapter. If Day 1 already delivered the lakefront experience, drive inland and save the time.

Use La Porte only for a defined meal, museum, or lake pause. Finish in South Bend with one anchor: the Studebaker National Museum, Notre Dame, or a downtown-and-riverfront visit. Two hours is enough for one focused stop; a half day supports a museum plus downtown.

Faster and slower versions

• One-day version: choose Chesterton or Michigan City, skip La Porte, and finish with one South Bend attraction.
• Outdoor weekend: stay near Chesterton, give the Dunes most of Day 1, and use Michigan City before the eastbound drive.
• Culture weekend: keep the Dunes visit short, use Michigan City arts or history, and reserve the larger block for South Bend museums.
• Bad-weather version: replace the beach and trail block with Michigan City or South Bend museums rather than trying to force the shoreline.

Reverse the route

From the east, start with South Bend before crowds or timed admissions complicate the day, overnight near Michigan City or Chesterton, then use the second morning for the Dunes. End in Gary only when a planned stop strengthens the Illinois handoff.

Continue planning
