Road trip plan
Dubuque to Waterloo Route 20 Weekend
Plan an eastern Iowa Route 20 weekend from Dubuque through the inland chain to Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Iowa Falls.
Dubuque to Waterloo Route 20 Weekend
Use this weekend when you want the eastern Iowa corridor to feel like a trip rather than a sequence of town names. The practical shape is one Mississippi River opening, one inland stop, and one Waterloo–Cedar Falls focus, with Iowa Falls reserved for travelers who have time to extend the finish west.

Use the east-central segment
Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Iowa Falls
Use the segment page when you want the practical handoff from the eastern Iowa weekend into the next Route 20 stretch.
Weekend at a glance
- Day 1: Dubuque, one inland stop, and a Waterloo or Cedar Falls overnight
- Day 2: choose Waterloo history or Cedar Falls downtown/outdoors; add Iowa Falls only when the afternoon remains open
- Best pace: two substantial anchors plus one smaller stop each day
- Avoid: trying to tour Dubuque, Dyersville, Independence, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Iowa Falls at equal depth
Day 1 — Mississippi River to the Cedar Valley
Morning: begin in Dubuque
Give Dubuque the first two or three hours. Choose a riverfront-and-downtown visit or one museum; do not try to empty the city’s attraction list before driving west. Starting after breakfast keeps the river crossing and parking decisions from consuming the middle of the day.
Midday: choose Dyersville or Independence
Use Dyersville when one signature attraction or a compact downtown pause fits the group. Choose Independence for local history, the river, or a later break closer to Waterloo. Manchester remains the practical meal or rest alternative when neither larger stop earns a full visit.
The discipline is one inland stop. Adding all three towns usually turns the Waterloo arrival into little more than a hotel check-in.
Late afternoon: arrive in Waterloo or Cedar Falls
End the driving day around Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Pick the overnight side according to the next morning’s priority: Waterloo for museums and practical city services, Cedar Falls for a walkable downtown and easier outdoor time.
Day 2 — Choose a Cedar Valley focus
Museum-and-history version
Center the morning on one Waterloo museum or history site, then add the riverfront or a meal. Cross to Cedar Falls only for a specific downtown, trail, or campus plan; the paired cities are close, but their visitor areas are not one walkable district.
Downtown-and-outdoors version
Begin in downtown Cedar Falls and pair it with the river, a trail segment, or a nature stop. Use Waterloo later for a meal, practical services, or one indoor attraction if weather changes.
Optional Iowa Falls finish
Iowa Falls is the extension, not a required weekend stop. Continue west only if the Cedar Valley plan is complete by early afternoon and the next trip will begin toward Fort Dodge. Otherwise, protect a relaxed second day and end in Waterloo or Cedar Falls.
Reverse the weekend
The itinerary also works eastbound. Start with Iowa Falls only if it is part of the arrival route, spend the main first day around Waterloo and Cedar Falls, choose Independence or Dyersville on Day 2, and finish with Dubuque’s riverfront. Reserve enough time for the Dubuque finish so it does not become a rushed photo stop.
Before you leave
Check Iowa 511 for current road conditions and construction. Confirm museum, historic-site, and attraction hours before assigning them a fixed time block, and keep an outdoor alternative ready for any closed or crowded stop.
