The Northwest Indiana Lakefront Approach is the Route 20 transition from the Chicago side into Indiana. Its defining decision is not which six towns to collect; it is how much of the day belongs to Lake Michigan before the route turns inland toward South Bend.

How the region works west to east
Gary, Portage, and Chesterton form the Dunes gateway. Michigan City is the strongest lakefront city and can absorb a half day or overnight. La Porte is the inland relief stop. South Bend is the larger city base and the hinge into eastern Indiana.
The main planning mistake is repeating the same Lake Michigan experience at Marquette Park, Portage Lakefront, the Dunes, and Washington Park. Choose one primary shoreline chapter and make the others optional.

Time and condition checks
A direct drive is easy to underestimate because the best lakefront stops sit north of Route 20. A Dunes visit can turn a short corridor into a full day, and summer parking may fill early. Check Indiana Dunes National Park or state-park conditions before leaving the route, use Indiana 511 for construction and weather, and check the Notre Dame calendar before relying on South Bend lodging or cross-city timing.
For one day, choose either the Dunes gateway or Michigan City as the main experience and finish in South Bend. For two days, give the lakefront its own first day and reserve the second for the inland transition.
