Drive section
Gary and the Indiana Dunes Gateway
West Indiana Route 20 gateway section built around Gary, the Dunes-side communities, and the Illinois handoff.
Gary and the Indiana Dunes Gateway
This is the clearest Illinois-to-Indiana Route 20 entry section on the site. It gives Indiana a true western handoff, a Dunes-side stretch, and a more readable gateway before the corridor continues toward Michigan City and South Bend.
Why this section matters
Use this section when you want the Indiana entry in direct route order instead of jumping straight to the farther-east anchors. It is the smallest west Indiana slice that makes the state feel like it starts on the road instead of beginning too late.
Stop roles on this section
- Gary is the western Indiana entry city and first bridge-state marker after Illinois.
- Portage is the practical Dunes-side support stop that keeps the lakefront stretch grounded.
- Chesterton is the strongest traveler-facing Dunes-side anchor on the current west Indiana entry.
Best fit
This section is best when you want:
- the clearest Illinois-to-Indiana handoff on Route 20
- a west Indiana drive that feels grounded in the road instead of skipping ahead
- one compact gateway layer before continuing toward Michigan City and South Bend
